Introduction

Karakoram International University, Gilgit-Baltistan, is a public sector university established in 2002 that serves as one of the region's leading centers of higher education, with faculties in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences & Engineering, and Humanities and Social Sciences spread across its main campus and sub-campuses in Hunza, Diamer, and Ghizer.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, KIU has developed its "Green Campus" as a model of eco-friendly higher education infrastructure. KIU was selected among the World's 1000 Universities adopting Green Metric initiatives in 2018, with efforts including the use of renewable energy, green buildings, and environment-friendly design, certified by the University of Indonesia. Following this recognition, the university's leadership guided teams to develop implementation plans in coordination with heads of departments and student societies.

The Green Campus initiative involves increasing plantation across the campus, improving waste management, maintaining cleanliness, and actively involving students to build awareness around sustainable practices. Fittingly, the campus itself is built around modern multi-storied buildings surrounded by lush green lawns and gardens, creating a tranquil environment conducive to learning. Through these efforts, KIU continues to strengthen its environmental credentials while nurturing a generation of students attuned to sustainability in one of Pakistan's most ecologically significant mountain regions
